Overview
A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. Paraesophageal hernias are where part of the stomach herniates alongside the esophagus.
These hernias often cause gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and other symptoms.

Recovery

A liquid diet is typically recommended for the first two to four weeks. Most patients gradually return to a normal diet as healing progresses.
